KIMEP Times

February 1, 2007

Why not make a whole website which is an online version of the KIMEP Times.

We could add new things like polls, comments and a more interactive forum too.

The mission of this website is to present KIMEP Students with more news faster and probably help student organizations by covering them more in detail.

The audience is going to be KIMEP Students.

Regarding the information preferences there will be a number of sections in this website
1). KIMEP Times articles.
2). News briefs on organizations.
3). News updates from different departments in KIMEP including office of register.
4). Interactive fourm where you can have a voice.

The milestones for this particular website will be:

For the Web site launch:

  1. A whole issue of KIMEP Times.
  2. Archieve of old articles since 2006.
  3. Comments and Guestbook.
  4. Student organizations pages.
  5. A discussion board – in a forum like manner.
  6. Number of hits tracking system.

After launching this website we hope to have:

  1. Regular news updates on student organizations and different departments of KIMEP
  2. Advertisments with job offers
  3. Education abroad program links
  4. Link to Student Government Fourm
  5. Calander of events ongoing in KIMEP

Site Proposal

January 30, 2007

My idea for a website is an interactive community for writers and photographers.

The mission of this website is to give a chance for newbie writers to express themselves and show others what they have to offer.

The audience is going to vary greatly. Anyone and everyone is welcome to express their opinion.

In order to get a better idea of who the website has attracted at first, a comments section will be created and possibly a small registration process in which questions regarding the age, gender, profession and what attracted the person to the site the most shall be asked. A system to measure the number of hits will also be used as a tracking tool.

Regarding the information preferences there will be five sections in this website
1). Writers guide – how to write well and tips
2). Photographers guide – guidelines for photographers on how to capture those special moments
3). Professional writers pieces with comments
4). Professional photographers pieces with comments
5). Interactive fourm where you can share your work and discuss issues related to these topics with others

Since bandwidth is very expensive in Kazakhstan, the platform specification will be very simple. A basic black and white structured website with the color red used to highlight certain important points.

There will be a lot of visual aspects in this websites – slide shows with probably optional music attached to them. However, the range of abilities won’t be too big so that website doesn’t take that much time to load.

DOs:
Make it simple and attractive
Easy to read and browse
Catchy photos and cartoons
User friendly

DONTs
Add too many things to click
Overload pages with too much data
Confuse the audience with the structure
Add pop-up advertisements
Make advertisements stand in the way and annoy the readers
Copy other – be unique!
Add very big audio files and big pictures – always reduce the size.

The milestones for this particular website will be:

For the Web site launch:

  1. A bunch of articles with tips for write and photographers – perhaps 5 each to start with.
  2. Small online registration process.
  3. Comments and Guestbook.
  4. A photo gallery or professional photos with their criticism along with a gallery of professional pieces of writing with their criticism.
  5. A discussion board – in a forum like manner.
  6. Number of hits tracking system.
  7. Advertisements.
  8. System that enable writes and photographers to upload their work.
  9. Site search system.
  10. Printer-friendly versions of the pages avalible.
  11. E-mails and contacts for feedback.
  12. A box at the end of the website that will link you to other pages.

After launching this website we hope to have:

  1. A web-blog system in which professional writers can contribute to this and add their tips for writing/same goes with photographers.
  2. Newsletters with updates of the website.
  3. A good number of people registered for the forums.
  4. Increased advertisements.
  5. A database of photographers for sale.
  6. A database of pieces of writing with comments.
  7. Add an RSS Feed system so people can add it to thier bloglines account and other sites of such nature.
  8. A friendly community with moderators all uniting to discuss their interests and maybe futher pages about our regular authors to help them promote their work.
  9. Some media coverage.

Samba Review

January 22, 2007

Samba Online  is the official website for the Saudi Arabian American Bank which is one of the best banks in K.S.A. It has received a few awards for it’s outstanding quality services and organizations. It’s website has everything and anything you need to know about banking and investments. It offers many different services and business deals which are linked to the bank itself. There are many online ‘products’ which it offers such as Samba Online which allows you to check your bank account online – I have used this service and find it outstanding. Among the other products it offers is Samba Connect, which is linked to Mobile phones, Samba Tadawul which is linked to online stock exchange – ‘Tadawul’ actually means buying and selling stocks in the stock market – it’s an Arabic word (obviously) – I’ve heard relatives speak of this service very highly. The website also offers the religious side of banking in order to follow the Sharia’h law (Islamic laws).

I like the structure of the site – it’s like it has boxes all around the place and each one is divided into categories which give you a good amount of information regarding whichever topic you choose. Sometimes the information is not enough and you need to ‘hunt’ the site for more information. The security measures are amazing. It does make online banking complicated at times but you can’t really blame the site for having such a closed system.

Having used this website for 3 years now I believe it’s does take you time to get the hang of it, however once you do, you’ll find it very useful. It’s not hard to get the hang of it.

The site has a virtual keyboard  which is rather amusing as it provides better security. Once you log on your bank account, it tells you the number of times which you logged on before and were unable to, it gives you a complete history of when you logged on including dates and timings and whether you were successful or not. It always shows you a record of the last money transfer transactions which you’ve made at whatever dates. Again, it has mobile services but no video or audio data (however I do believe that it’s not really required in a bank website).

The design is very attractive, yet again – there is a little too much and sometimes there are too many things I’d like to read about all at once so it is pretty distracting. There are no pesky commercials again which is always a good thing.

Website/News source review – BBC News

January 21, 2007

BBC News website is an excellent sources of information. Not only does it update you on the latest happenings of the world, but it also has a lot of interesting information that you can use for research and background knowledge. It has video and audio news too which is easy to work with and it’s always interesting too look at the interactive part of the website in the ‘Have Your Say’ section. It’s also a lot of fun to do the quizzes online which they have to test your knowledge. It contains picture reports, news reports, special reports, weather forecast and much more. There is also a low graphics edition which great if you’re internet connection is slow as it usually is in Kazakhstan ;-) Also, the website can be viewed in many other languages including Arabic, Spanish, Russian and much more.

I remember spending over an hour browsing the BBC world website. It’s very well organized and easy to locate any information you need. It’s extremely user friendly. I do however believe that there are too many items to click which constantly distracts the reader. You can be updated on all the major international headlines and the latest news by looking just at the front page of the international news section. I like the fact that there are no advertisements (only the BBC mobile and podcast ones).

I’ve always wished that some websites would be as organized and easy to use as this one. Sometimes, it may take me up to a month to figure out how to use a website and where all the ‘goodies’ are. With this site, I successfully managed to explore it within 2 hours maximum. Whenever I do any research, this site also provides me access to useful information very easily. I can get a sound foundation of whatever I want with this website regarding any topic whatsoever (some are unavailable but still) within 5 minutes or searching.

This site has it all when it comes to technology. From print, to video, audio, mobile phone, comments and feedback, blogs, podcasts and interaction. I strongly believe that this is really a model site which is excellent to look at for anyone who’d like to create an interactive website of their own.
